Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy—and strong voter protection efforts ensure every eligible voter can cast their ballot safely, securely, and without interference. As voting laws continue to evolve in Florida, the need for trained poll watchers and election volunteers has never been more important.
While Florida’s SAVE Act—passed by Governor Ro
n DeSantis and the Republican supermajority—will not take effect until 2027, we must begin preparing now. The law introduces stricter voter identification and verification requirements, limits access to vote-by-mail, and expands the ability to challenge voter eligibility. These changes are widely seen by voting rights advocates as potential voter suppression measures, particularly impacting seniors, students, and communities of color.
Understanding these changes and strengthening election protection in Florida is critical to ensuring fair access to the ballot.
What Is a Poll Watcher?
Poll watchers are trained, partisan volunteers who help protect voters and ensure transparency during elections. Also known as election observers, they monitor polling locations to ensure rules are followed and no unlawful activity interferes with the voting process.
It’s important to understand the difference:
Poll Workers: Paid, nonpartisan staff employed by the Supervisor of Elections
Poll Watchers: Trained volunteers representing a political party or candidate
Poll watchers do not interfere with voters, handle ballots, or disrupt the process. Their role is to observe, document, and report concerns—supporting election integrity while protecting voter privacy.
Poll Watcher Training in Miami Beach
The Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee (DEC), also known as the County Democratic Party and chaired by Laura Kelly, leads local voter protection efforts in Miami-Dade.
Trainings are conducted by the Voter Protection (VotePro) Team, a committee of experienced election attorneys led by Jane Moscowitz. These sessions prepare volunteers to understand election law, voter rights, and proper observation protocols.
📅 Training Dates (Democratic Primary):
June 2 at 6:00 PM (Zoom)
July 28 at 7:00 PM (Zoom)
These virtual sessions provide everything you need to serve as a poll watcher in Florida, including guidance on election laws, voter rights, and reporting procedures.
👉 Additional trainings will be offered ahead of the General Election. However, if you complete one of the trainings above, you will be fully certified to serve as a poll watcher for both the Primary and the General Election.
After training, volunteers will:
Submit credentials to the Supervisor of Elections
Receive official poll watcher badges
Be assigned to polling locations (one poll watcher per site)
