Rob Piper Advances to the Runoff—and Now He Needs All of Us

The voters of Miami-Dade County Commission District 5 have spoken: Rob Piper has advanced to the November 3 runoff.

In a closely contested three-candidate race, Rob earned 4,928 votes—29.5% of all ballots cast—and finished in second place, defeating former Miami City Commissioner Joe Sanchez and securing his place in the November 3 election. Rob entered this race without the financial advantages or political machinery his opponents enjoyed. What he did have was a record of service, a clear message, and a growing grassroots coalition that believed District 5 deserved a different kind of leadership.

That coalition delivered. Rob’s advancement is more than a campaign milestone; it is proof that grassroots organizing works. Conversations at doors, phone calls to voters, text messages, social media posts, contributions, endorsements, and personal recommendations all helped introduce Rob to residents across Miami Beach, Downtown Miami, Brickell, Coral Way, Little Havana, and the surrounding communities of District 5.

Now, the race begins again—and the stakes are even higher.

Why the Miami Beach Democratic Club Endorsed Rob

The Miami Beach Democratic Club proudly endorsed Rob because he reflects our values and has consistently shown up for our Democratic community. Rob is a retired Marine, educator, community activist, and lifelong Democrat whose commitment to service began long before he became a candidate.

After graduating from Penn State, Rob was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He served our country for more than two decades, including three combat tours in Iraq, before completing his final military assignment in Miami. Since retiring from the Marines, he has continued serving others through education, civic engagement, and Democratic organizing.

Rob understands that public office should be about improving people’s lives—not gaining access, influence, or personal power. His campaign is centered on the issues District 5 residents confront every day: housing and condominium affordability, government transparency and ethics, climate resilience, environmental protection, public safety, transportation, traffic, and stronger community participation in county government.

These are not abstract policy debates. Residents are struggling with rising housing costs, insurance premiums, condominium assessments, traffic congestion, flooding, and a government that too often seems more responsive to well-connected interests than to the people who live here. Rob believes government must listen to residents, protect neighborhoods, plan responsibly, and make decisions openly.

Most importantly, Rob does not simply talk about Democratic values during an election. He has spent years doing the work, organizing volunteers, supporting Democratic candidates, participating in civic organizations, and helping residents become more engaged in their government. Rob has stood with us, and now we must stand with him.

A Growing Coalition Behind Rob

Our Club is not alone in recognizing Rob’s leadership. The Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee, representing Democrats throughout the county, also endorsed him. In announcing its support, the county party emphasized Rob’s commitment to transparency, accountability, affordability, and the everyday residents of District 5.

That endorsement carries particular importance because the County Commission District 5 election is officially nonpartisan. No political party designation will appear next to Rob’s name on the ballot. Voters who reliably support Democratic candidates may not automatically know that Rob is a lifelong Democrat or that his opponent is a Republican state legislator.

That means we must communicate what the ballot will not: Rob Piper is our Democrat in the District 5 runoff.

Rob also earned the endorsement of the Miami Herald Editorial Board. The Herald’s recommendation provided another independent recognition of his experience, character, and readiness to serve. Together, these endorsements represent a broad and growing consensus: Rob offers District 5 a credible, principled alternative and deserves the opportunity to bring his service-oriented leadership to the County Commission.

Endorsements alone, however, do not win elections. People do.

Finishing Second Was Only the Beginning

Rob’s second-place finish demonstrated that he can compete—but the runoff presents a new challenge. His opponent entered the race with the advantages of incumbency, name recognition, established fundraising networks, and support from powerful interests. Rob will need to reach every voter who supported him in August, persuade those who backed another candidate, and introduce himself to thousands of residents who did not participate in the first election.

The good news is that runoff elections provide voters with a clear choice. This is no longer a three-person contest. District 5 residents will decide between two candidates and two different approaches to public service.

Rob offers leadership rooted in integrity, accountability, community, and service. He will put residents ahead of special interests, defend local communities, and bring an independent voice to County Hall. He understands that responsible development must include affordability, infrastructure, resilience, and respect for the people already living in our neighborhoods.

This is a winnable race—but only if we treat it like one.

Rob Needs All of Us

Rob cannot match entrenched political power dollar for dollar. What we can build is something stronger: a people-powered campaign reaching voters through trusted neighbors, volunteers, Democratic organizations, and community leaders.

Between now and November 3, we need members and supporters to knock on doors, make phone calls, send texts, attend canvasses, display signs, contribute what they can, share Rob’s message, and speak directly with friends and neighbors. Every conversation matters, especially in a local runoff where a relatively small number of votes can determine who represents us at County Hall.

Rob has already accomplished what many political insiders doubted was possible. He built a genuine grassroots campaign, earned the support of the Miami Beach Democratic Club, secured the endorsement of the Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee and the Miami Herald, and advanced to the runoff.

District 5 deserves a commissioner who shares our values, understands our communities, and answers to the people—not powerful special interests. District 5 deserves Rob Piper.
