July Beach Dems Membership Meeting Recap: A Packed House, Important Action, and a Call to Get Involved

We had a packed room for our July Dem Membership Meeting, and it was one of our most eventful meetings of the year. Members gathered to hear from inspiring guest speakers, discuss important public policy issues, receive campaign updates, and take action on behalf of our community and Democratic values.

The evening reflected what the Miami Beach Democratic Club is all about—bringing people together to stay informed, engage in meaningful conversations, and make a difference through advocacy, volunteerism, and civic participation.

Members Approve Resolution Opposing the State Property Tax Constitutional Amendment

One of the most significant moments of the evening was the membership's approval of a resolution opposing the proposed State Property Tax Constitutional Amendment.

After the resolution had previously been approved by the Board of Directors, members voted to formally adopt the resolution, expressing the Club's concerns that eliminating property taxes could have devastating consequences for municipalities, counties, public schools, emergency services, and other essential local government functions. Members emphasized the importance of protecting reliable local funding while encouraging thoughtful solutions that provide tax relief without jeopardizing critical public services.

Inspiring Dems Guest Speakers

The meeting featured an outstanding lineup of guest speakers representing public service, advocacy, and community leadership.

U.S. Senate Candidate Alex Vindman

Members were honored to hear from Alex Vindman, Democratic candidate for the United States Senate.

A retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and American patriot, Vindman spoke about his commitment to protecting democracy, defending constitutional values, supporting veterans, and restoring trust in government. He shared why he entered the race and discussed the importance of civic engagement during this critical election cycle.

His remarks received an enthusiastic response from attendees, many of whom appreciated his message of integrity, service, and leadership.

State Senator Shevrin Jones

State Senator Shevrin Jones provided members with an update on the 2026 Legislative Session and discussed several of the challenges facing Florida today.

He spoke about the importance of remaining engaged in state politics, supporting Democratic candidates across Florida, and continuing to advocate for policies that strengthen public education, protect individual freedoms, and create opportunity for every Floridian.

Senator Jones also encouraged members to stay active beyond Election Day by continuing to organize, volunteer, and participate in their local communities.

Transitions Miami

We were also pleased to welcome Stephen Gilmore, Executive Director of Transitions Miami, along with Ashley Litwin Diego, President of the organization's Board of Directors.

They shared the inspiring work Transitions Miami is doing to support young adults experiencing homelessness and youth aging out of foster care. Through housing, education, workforce development, mentoring, and wraparound services, the organization helps young people build stable and successful futures.

Their presentation served as a powerful reminder that strong communities are built through partnerships, compassion, and long-term investment in our youth.

Special Remarks from Rob Piper

We were excited to hear special remarks from Rob Piper, Democratic candidate for Miami-Dade County Commission District 5.

Rob shared updates from the campaign trail, thanked the Miami Beach Democratic Club for its continued support, and spoke about the importance of electing leaders who will prioritize transparency, affordable housing, climate resilience, and responsive local government.

As the only Democrat in the District 5 race, Rob encouraged members to continue volunteering, talking with neighbors, and helping spread the word as vote-by-mail ballots arrive and early voting approaches.

Linda Kolko Highlights the Importance of Supporting Democratic Candidates

Board Member Linda Kolko spoke passionately about the importance of grassroots fundraising and the role every member can play in electing Democrats at every level of government.

Linda discussed the Club's ongoing efforts to support Rob Piper, the only Democrat running for Miami-Dade County Commission District 5. She emphasized that local elections often have a direct impact on residents' daily lives and that volunteers, small-dollar donations, and community outreach can make the difference in close races.

She also expressed disappointment that several Democratic elected officials have chosen to endorse Rob Piper's Republican opponent rather than supporting the Democratic candidate in the race. Linda reminded members that while endorsements are ultimately individual decisions, the Club remains committed to supporting Democratic candidates and strengthening the Democratic Party throughout Miami-Dade County.

Summer Volunteer Challenge Continues

Board Member Tim Johnson provided an update on the Club's Summer Volunteer Challenge and reminded members that elections are won through direct voter contact.

Tim encouraged everyone to participate by making at least 20 phone calls or text messages each week to Democratic voters. Whether calling from home, joining a Day of Action, or helping with peer-to-peer texting, every conversation helps inform voters, increase turnout, and build momentum heading into Election Day.

The Summer Volunteer Challenge has already resulted in thousands of voter contacts, and members were encouraged to continue the momentum throughout the election season.

Looking Ahead

As always, our meeting demonstrated the power of an engaged grassroots organization. From approving important policy positions to hearing from outstanding Democratic leaders, nonprofit partners, and local candidates, the evening showcased the impact that informed and active citizens can have on their community.

With Election Day quickly approaching, there has never been a more important time to get involved. Whether you can volunteer an hour a week, make 20 calls or texts, attend a Day of Action, or support Democratic candidates through grassroots fundraising, every effort matters.
