Miami Beach is known around the world for its beautiful shoreline, vibrant neighborhoods, and unique natural environment. Protecting that environment requires ongoing care and commitment from residents, volunteers, and community organizations. One of the leading forces behind these efforts is Clean Miami Beach, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing marine debris and protecting our coastal ecosystem through regular clean ups, education, and community engagement.
Founded by Sophie Ringel, Clean Miami Beach has grown into a powerful grassroots movement across our city. The organization hosts dozens of clean ups each year across beaches, parks, waterways, and neighborhoods. Beyond removing trash, these events serve an important educational purpose—helping participants understand how everyday waste can travel through storm drains into Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, threatening marine life and degrading the ecosystems that make Miami Beach so special.
Neighborhood clean ups are particularly important because much of the debris that ends up in our waterways begins on our streets and sidewalks. Plastic bottles, food wrappers, cigarette butts, and other litter are often carried by wind or rain into drains and canals. By removing this waste early, volunteers help prevent pollution before it ever reaches our coastal waters.
That spirit of environmental stewardship was on full display at our recent Neighborhood Clean Up in partnership with Clean Miami Beach. Volunteers from the Miami Beach Democratic Club joined neighbors and community members for a morning dedicated to improving our local environment. Armed with gloves, buckets, and a shared sense of purpose, our group worked together to comb through streets, green spaces, and public areas in the neighborhood.
Thanks to the incredible energy and dedication of our volunteers, the group collected more than 70 pounds of trash during the clean up. Each piece of debris removed—from small plastic fragments to larger discarded items—represents one less piece of pollution in our environment and a step toward a cleaner, healthier Miami Beach.
Just as meaningful as the environmental impact was the strong sense of community throughout the evening. Events like these bring together residents who share a commitment to protecting our city and demonstrate the power of collective action. Volunteers had the opportunity not only to improve their neighborhood but also to connect with fellow community members who care deeply about the future of Miami Beach.
After the clean up wrapped up, volunteers gathered for a well-deserved happy hour to celebrate the day’s accomplishments. A special thank you goes to Board Member Linda Kolko, who graciously hosted the post-clean up gathering. It was the perfect opportunity for participants to relax, share stories from the morning, and continue building the friendships and community connections that make events like this so meaningful.
We are especially grateful to Sophie Ringel, Founder and CEO of Clean Miami Beach, for her leadership and for partnering with our club on this important initiative. Her work continues to inspire residents across Miami Beach to take action in protecting our shared environment.
To everyone who joined us and volunteered with the Beach Dems—thank you for showing up, rolling up your sleeves, and helping make a tangible difference in our community. Together, we demonstrated that when neighbors work side by side, even small actions can create a powerful impact.
We look forward to partnering with Clean Miami Beach again and continuing to find ways for our members to serve and strengthen the Miami Beach community we all call home.
