Rob Piper: A New Voice for Miami-Dade County Commission District 5

This August, voters in Miami-Dade County Commission District 5 will make an important decision about the future of our community.
Unlike partisan elections, Miami-Dade County Commission races are officially nonpartisan, meaning candidates will not have a Democrat or Republican designation next to their names on the ballot. As a result, many voters may not realize which candidates share their values and which do not. That makes voter education and grassroots outreach especially important. It is our responsibility to spread the word, engage our neighbors, and ensure voters have the information they need before casting their ballots.
The seat became vacant after former Commissioner Eileen Higgins resigned following her campaign for Mayor of the City of Miami. The election to fill this position will help determine the direction of county government on issues ranging from housing affordability and transportation to climate resilience and public safety.
The stakes could not be higher.
According to voter registration data, District 5 is home to 30,510 Democrats, 42,035 voters with No Party Affiliation (NPA), and 32,384 Republicans. Democrats represent the largest organized voting bloc in the district, but victory will depend on strong Democratic turnout and earning the support of left-leaning independent voters who share our values. With more than 42,000 independent voters in the district, this election will be decided by engagement, turnout, and coalition building.
That is why Democrats have a unique opportunity to elect Rob Piper, a veteran, educator, community activist, and lifelong public servant, to represent District 5 on the Miami-Dade County Commission.

While Rob Piper is running on a platform of transparency, service, and accountability, voters should also examine the record of his opponent, Vicki Lopez, a registered Republican.
Representative Lopez was a principal architect of Florida's Live Local Act and later sponsored legislation expanding the law. While supporters argue the legislation promotes housing development, critics contend that it weakens local control and threatens historic preservation protections in communities like Miami Beach.
Representative Lopez has also supported a number of controversial measures opposed by many Democrats, including legislation related to reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ equality, public education, labor protections, and local government authority. Her voting record includes support for bills restricting reproductive healthcare access, expanding book bans, limiting gender-affirming healthcare, rolling back child labor protections, and other measures that have sparked significant debate across Florida.

As Democrats, we believe Miami-Dade County deserves leaders who will protect reproductive freedom, defend LGBTQ+ rights, strengthen public education, address climate change, and promote inclusive government. Joe Sanchez's embrace of the MAGA movement reflects a political agenda that is fundamentally at odds with the values of most Democratic and progressive voters in District 5. This election is not simply about choosing a commissioner—it is about ensuring that Miami-Dade County continues moving forward rather than backward.

District 5 is one of the most competitive districts in Miami-Dade County. Democrats cannot afford to sit this election out.
With 30,510 registered Democrats and more than 42,000 independent voters in the district, turning out every Democrat and reaching left-leaning NPAs will be critical to victory. Elections like this are won by the people who show up.
