October General Meeting Recap: Less Than a Month to Go— Democrats Let’s Get to Work

Oct 7
4 min read

With Election Day less than a month away, our October General Membership Meeting was focused on one thing: turning our energy into action.

Vote-by-mail ballots are already in voters’ hands, Early Voting begins October 19, and Election Day is November 3. The next few weeks are critical—and the Miami Beach Democrats are ready to get to work.

Club Updates: Slate Cards Are Here!

Our Democratic slate cards have arrived!

These cards give Miami Beach voters the information they need to vote all the way down the ballot—including races and ballot questions where party affiliation may not be obvious. We need volunteers to help get them into voters’ hands. Live in a condo or apartment building? Sign up to distribute slate cards in your building and under your neighbors’ doors.

We also need volunteers to distribute slate cards during Early Voting, October 19–November 1, with Miami Beach City Hall as our highest-priority location. Even a two-hour shift can help us reach more voters before they cast their ballots. Complete the volunteer form and pick a shift.

A huge thank-you also goes to everyone who has already signed up to serve as a poll watcher. Trained volunteers inside polling locations are another important part of our Election Day operation, and we appreciate everyone who has stepped up.

And slate cards are only one piece of our GOTV work. Our calendar is packed with Days of Action, canvasses, phone banks, community events, and other opportunities to help turn out voters. Whether you can give us two hours or several days over the next month, there is a way to help.

Have You Tracked Your Vote-by-Mail Ballot?

If you already returned your vote-by-mail ballot, don’t assume your job is finished—track it. A ballot can encounter a problem, including a missing or mismatched signature. Florida voters have an opportunity to correct certain problems, but only if they know there is an issue. Track your ballot, make sure it was accepted, and encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to do the same. Every vote deserves to be counted.

Hearing From Our Candidates

We were thrilled to welcome four Democratic candidates who spoke about what is at stake in this election and the work ahead.

Angie Nixon

Angie Nixon joined us via Zoom and delivered an important message about the final weeks of the campaign: we have to get out the vote.

She stressed that winning requires more than supporting Democratic candidates—it requires turning that support into actual votes. That means talking to our neighbors, knocking on doors, making calls, volunteering, and making sure the people in our communities have a plan to vote.

Her message was a fitting one for this point in the election: the work we do over the next

few weeks matters.

Annette Taddeo

Annette Taddeo, our Democratic candidate for Florida Chief Financial Officer, spoke about Florida’s finances, accountability, and the importance of having an independent watchdog looking out for taxpayers.

She discussed the responsibility of the CFO to oversee the state’s finances and emphasized the need for greater transparency and accountability in Tallahassee. With billions of taxpayer dollars at stake, Floridians deserve to know that their money is being managed responsibly and that someone is willing to ask tough questions.

Rob Piper

Rob Piper, candidate for Miami-Dade County Commission District 5, brought the conversation back home and spoke about what is at stake in our own community.

Rob discussed his commitment to keeping District 5 progressive and ensuring residents have a strong voice on the County Commission. He spoke about representing our shared values and putting residents ahead of special interests.

This race is especially important because the County Commission District 5 race is nonpartisan on the ballot—Rob will not have a “D” next to his name. That makes our voter education and slate-card efforts even more important.

George Lavin

George Lavin, Democratic candidate for Florida Senate District 35, spoke about the importance of fighting for our communities and bringing meaningful change to Tallahassee. George emphasized the need for leadership that puts everyday Floridians first, stands up for our shared Democratic values, and ensures our voices are heard in the Florida Senate. His message reinforced why 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦 and why we must work together to elect Democrats up and down the ballot!

We thank Angie, Annette, Rob, and George for joining us and sharing their vision with our members.

Now We Need You

We can hold meetings. We can print slate cards. We can organize Days of Action. We can make phone calls, send texts, and knock on doors.

But none of it happens without volunteers.

You don’t have to do everything. Pick one action. Take an Early Voting slate-card shift. Distribute cards in your building. Join a Day of Action. Make calls. Knock doors. Help us reach one more voter. Then bring a friend and ask them to pick one, too.

We have less than a month. Let’s use every day of it. Pick an action. RSVP. Show up. Let’s get to work.
