Our February monthly meeting was filled with dynamic discussions, key political updates, and exciting opportunities to engage with our community as we gear up for a critical election year. From celebrating Black History Month to addressing pressing issues at City Hall, our club continues to take action to shape the future of Miami Beach and beyond.
Honoring Black History Month:
A Conversation with Professor Charlton Copeland
🎤 In recognition of Black History Month, we were honored to host University of Miami Law Professor Charlton Copeland, a leading scholar on the intersection of race and American political institutions. Professor Copeland provided an insightful analysis of how race and law have shaped American democracy, particularly as we witness increasing efforts at the federal level to roll back civil rights protections that took decades to establish.
His discussion underscored the urgency of our fight for racial justice, voting rights, and fair representation. With state and national policies increasingly restricting civil liberties, it’s more important than ever to remain vigilant, informed, and ready to mobilize. His call to action? Stay engaged, advocate for inclusive policies, and support leaders championing equity and justice.
City Hall Updates:
Commissioner Alex Fernandez on Key Issues Facing Miami Beach
🏛️ Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez joined us to provide updates on critical city issues, including public safety, state government overreach, traffic and transit challenges, and the future of development in Miami Beach.
Traffic & Public Transportation Concerns
One of Miami Beach's biggest challenges is traffic congestion and the need for improved public transportation. Residents continue to experience gridlocked streets and limited transit options, making commuting difficult.
The Commissioner addressed the need for long-term solutions, including expanding public transit options, improving bike lanes and walkability, and exploring traffic flow improvements. With Miami Beach being a hub for tourism, balancing the needs of residents and visitors remains a top priority.
Deauville Hotel Project & Overdevelopment Concerns
The discussion also focused on overdevelopment and its impact on Miami Beach’s character, infrastructure, and affordability. The proposed redevelopment of the historic Deauville Hotel site—a controversial project initially backed by billionaire developer Stephen Ross—has raised concerns among residents regarding its potential impact on housing, traffic, and the overall community aesthetic.
Commissioner Fernandez acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the importance of responsible development that aligns with Miami Beach’s unique identity and quality of life. The debate over sustainable growth versus over-commercialization is a pressing issue, and residents are encouraged to stay involved in upcoming city meetings and decisions.

Why Local Elections Matter
With municipal elections later this year, President Knapp stressed the importance of electing Democrats prioritizing innovative, sustainable policies for Miami Beach. Local government directly impacts our daily lives, from traffic policies to zoning laws—so staying engaged and voting is crucial. Local elections will take place on November 4th.
