Mayor of Miami Beach Dan Gelber drew a standing-room only crowd to the Hôtel Gaythering. He talked about his family's history in Miami Beach politics, what compelled him to run for mayor, and why he's proud of the city's environmental and resiliency initiatives.

Pride Parade Report

President Dan Royles reported on the success of the club's participation in the Miami Beach Gay Pride parade and thanked our financial sponsors, who made it all possible.

We showed off one of our new banners at the front of Hotel Gaythering, which also hung from our double-decker bus during the pride parade. 

Treasurer Election in May

The club's board announced that an election for a new treasurer will take place at our next membership meeting, on Monday, May 20 at 7pm. If you're interested in running or know someone who might be, please send your nomination to [email protected].


Coming Up:

Voter Registration by Mail Party

We're joining forces on Saturday, May 11 with Swing Left and Vote Forward to register new voters—by mail! Come write personalized letters to Floridians who have not yet registered to vote, and help us build grassroots power leading up to 2020.

  • When: Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 2 to 4 pm
  • Where: Hôtel Gaythering (1409 Lincoln Rd)
  • What: Writing personalized letters to unregistered Floridians with register-to-vote instructions

 

Movie Night: The Brink at Miami Beach Cinematheque

Join us on Thursday, May 16 for our first movie night of 2019! We'll be watching The Brink, a fly-on-the-wall chronicle of embattled former White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon's global mission to spread extreme nationalism.

  • When: Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 6 pm – 8:45 pm
  • Where: Old Historic City Hall 1130 Washington Avenue South Side First Floor, Miami Beach, Florida 33139
  • What: Social hour with wine and cheese at 6 pm, followed by screening of The Brink at 7 pm
  • Cost: $9.50 (includes a glass of wine and cheese)

 

May Membership Meeting

Please join us on Monday, May 20 at 7 pm at the Hotel Gaythering (1409 Lincoln Road) for our May Membership Meeting! We will be hosting Senator Jason Pizzo and Representative Michael Grieco, who will give us an update on the legislative session in Tallahassee.

We will also hold an election for club treasurer—please email nominations to [email protected].

 

June 2: Help the Homeless at Camillus House

Please join the Miami Beach Democratic Club to help the homeless and hand out lunches at Camillus House.

  • When: Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 10:45 AM – 2 PM
  • Where: Camillus House, 1603 NW 7th Ave, Miami, Florida 33136
  • What: Help the homeless by volunteering at Camillus House

We will organize car pooling.

Donna Shalala: Re-Election Campaign Kickoff
